Event Description

For decades, the outdoor profession has struggled to make outdoor organizations and spaces more representative of the full diversity of our society. This is a persistent, large-scale challenge that needs to be resolved. Developed by Karel Hilversum and presented in the recent book The Outdoor Leader by Jeannette Stawski, The 7 Principles for the Outdoor Educator "scheme" is intended to serve as a baseline curriculum for outdoor instructors on the topic of DEI. Hopefully, it will be used in a similar way as the 7 Principles of Leave No Trace. This means anyone can reach the same general understanding of the DEI challenge, gain a base level of knowledge, and take steps that lead to meaningful change in their practice. Even more, anyone can teach it forward. The goal is to democratize the role of DEI educators and change-makers in the outdoors. In this session, we will dive into the 7 principles scheme and discuss its application.

Presenter:

Karel Hilversum, Cornell University

Karel has been an outdoor educator, guide, and leader since 1990. He started his adventures in the tropical rainforest, underground rivers, and cave systems of his home island of Puerto Rico. Since those early days, he has led wilderness expeditions in the USA, the Caribbean, Europe, Africa, & Latin America. Most notably, he summited Argentina’s Mt. Aconcagua (22,831'), the tallest mountain in the Western Hemisphere. Karel served as Director for Cornell Outdoor Education from 2018 to 2024. During his tenure, COE experienced tremendous growth and set the foundations for a more inclusive organization. COE is the largest university-based outdoor education program in the nation. He also served as a member of AORE's board of directors from 2021 to 2024. In 2024, he unveiled his framework of the 7 Principles of DEI for the Outdoor Educator as a collaborator on Jeannette Stawski's book, The Outdoor Leader from The Mountaineers. He holds a Master's degree in Experiential Education and Leadership from Minnesota State University, Mankato, and is a PhD candidate in Organizational Leadership from The Chicago School. Currently, Karel serves as a Faculty of Leadership at the prestigious Selander Center for Engineering Leadership at Cornell University’s College of Engineering. He is a sought-after professional leadership coach and trusted advisor for leaders from around the world for organizations like NASA, Google, Amazon, Meta, Disney, Workday, BlackRock, and many more. Karel lives in Ithaca, NY, with his wife Eva, son Koen, and dog Thea. And if you really knew Karel, you would know that he enjoys reading and writing poetry, singing, and playing his guitar to Latin American "nova trova" songs.
