Join the growing pool of PCIA providers across the nation.
A PCIA Single Pitch Climbing Instructor (SPCI) or Top Rope Climbing Instructor (TRCI) Course Provider delivers state of the art climbing education and evaluates the readiness of candidates to become certified PCIA climbing instructors. This three day workshop prepares existing climbing instructors to become TRCI or SPCI course providers. Course providers may elect to deliver only the Top Rope Climbing Instructor course (no leading required) or the full Single Pitch Climbing Instructor course (leading required). During the training participants will be expected to organize and lead multiple presentations, demonstrate a range of technical skills, discuss and debate various technical systems and educational strategies, develop subject teaching plans, and be challenged to expand their technical skills and educational delivery methods well beyond the climbing instructor level. This course is intended to enhance and fine tune existing core skills through improved efficiency and understanding of systems as well as risks and benefits. Technically this training will address and going beyond all of the skills delivered in a standard single pitch or top rope climbing instructor course including but not limited to: belay methods and management, rappel methods and management, top and base site management, anchor system design, raising systems, equipment selection, student belayer management, coaching and rescue methods, protecting your lead, and lead climbing transitions to lowering and rappelling. Educationally the workshop will address the taxonomy of learning, teaching and learning styles, and share many tips and tricks for teaching the art of climbing.

The PCIA climbing instructor trainers must be extremely well informed about climbing equipment and techniques, be superb technicians who are highly skilled in the management of clients in hazardous terrain, and be patient, caring educators who continually strive to better their own knowledge and delivery methods.

- Has a professional degree related to outdoor education.
- Has at least 5 years of outdoor leadership experience.
- Has over 200 days of experience teaching entry level climbing to both individuals and groups that includes base and top managed climbing as well as rappelling.
- At least 5 years of substantial traditional climbing experience placing anchors, etc. Those seeking to become single pitch instructors should have at least 5 years of traditional lead climbing experience with a current ability to comfortably lead 5.7 routes.
- PCIA, AMGA or similar certification for three or more years strongly suggested.
- Can demonstrate a performance level well above the AMGA or PCIA single pitch exam level.
