Association of Outdoor Recreation and Education - Event Information - Association of Outdoor Recreation and Education

Event Name:
AEE Heartland Regional Conference @ Makanda, IL

Event Type(s):
Conference

Description:
Experiential and project based learning is one of the most effective and engaging forms of education.  We know this because we are out there, we see the outcomes first hand; but how do we tell our story.  From adventure therapy to k-12 educators, we as experiential educators are producing innovative methods to reach our students and clients, now it’s time to tell our story.  Let’s help one another raise the bar so that we collectively can raise the bar of our field.  Let’s come together and talk about how we are building a bigger point and bringing experiential learning to people and places outside of our AEE community.  Help us tell the story of you, your work, and our field.  Join us at beautiful Touch of Nature Environmental Center at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale.

About Touch of Nature:
Located in the beautiful Shawnee National Forest, Touch of Nature has provided experiential learning opportunities for the students of Southern Illinois University for 70 years.  Since 1949, Touch of Nature Environmental Center has grown to over 3,100 acres of rolling hills and lush forests which provide the perfect atmosphere for outdoor education and adventure for both young and old alike.  Over the years, Touch of Nature has paved the way for therapeutic recreation programs such as Camp Little Giant - and even the Special Olympics - becoming one of the first camps for people with disabilities in the nation.  It has taken people to new heights with the Adventure Education program, becoming the first adventure program outside of Outward Bound. Adventure Education and Environmental Education continue to teach people of all ages and backgrounds the importance of environmental education through experiential learning and exploration.
