Event Description
Facilitating an outdoor recreation and/or education group requires technical skills in the area of focus such as wilderness medicine, backpacking, etc. Just as importantly, and often overlooked, are group facilitation knowledge and skills that pertain to any type of program. In this PD webinar we will look at the basics of facilitation that can be adapted to any activity and any group. We will look at core ideas in three areas related to facilitation:
1) The steps of the Kolb Experiential Learning Cycle that outlines facilitation for groups: concrete experience, reflective observation, abstract conceptualization, and active experimentation. How do we facilitate each step in this process and how do we plan for individuals and/or groups that tend towards one of the steps over the others?
2) What are cultural considerations for learning based on individuals and groups and how does that affect how they approach each step in the learning cycle?
3) How do individuals and/or groups differ in communication and processing styles and how do we plan for that in facilitation? We will spend time reviewing and discussing basic information as well as look at and try some specific facilitation exercises.
This session is free for members to attend for members and $50 for not-yet-members.
