Event Description

Bring it Outside - Weaving an Interdisciplinary Network to Grow a Community that Empowers Marginalized Families to Get Outside Together

Join AORE Leadership and members as we come together to discuss industry current events, challenges and member questions.

Hike it Baby has built relationships across rural and marginalized communities to bring together a network of organizations that support families and develop an understanding of outside time, the impact and benefits it has on their children and the relationship it  builds with families in  nature. Our long term goal is to create  ongoing, self-sustaining communities that have the tools they need to empower families to get outside, regardless of their experience, ability, background, or financial position. We'll talk about how we have designed and implemented early education based programming, sought partners, and begun building these communities. Along the way, we'll touch on our overall philosophies, values, and the processes that are working. We will also be honest about our struggles and what we're doing to overcome them. Audience members will reflect and brainstorm about how they can build strong community focused networks and work across agencies and industries to build a more robust pipeline of future outdoor enthusiasts.

The second half of our chat is an open forum. We invite you to bring your current challenges, successes, questions, and experiences. As a collective group, we will determine the path of discussion the forum takes and provide opportunities for members to support each other through shared experiences.

Meet Your Presenter:
Jessica Carrillo Alatorre

Jessica Carrillo Alatorre has been a part of Hike it Baby since the summer of 2014 when she took her 6 month old for a new moms hike. There she met HiB founder, Shanti Hodges and sparked a friendship and partnership that has helped make HiB what it is today. Growing up on the Oregon coast, Jessica spent a lot of her youth outdoors, falling in love with nature. She has a Bachelor’s degree in Management and Organizational Leadership from George Fox University. She is committed to building a future where the outdoors is a safe, accessible space for all families to enjoy, regardless of their race, gender, ability, socioeconomic status,  orientation, or religion and the definition of outdoorsy isn’t limited to one type of person with specific gear engaging in specific activities.  Jessica and her husband Chris enjoy exploring with their two girls, Natalie (8) and Elisabeth (6) around the Portland metro area they call home. Their home includes 4 generations of Alatorres ranging from 6 to 106, 1 dog, and 2 cats. Jessica’s favorite hikes often include waterfalls and wildflowers. Continually inspired by the passion and commitment of the volunteers who drive Hike it Baby along with the mission that has created the kind of community she wants her girls to be a part of, Jessica is proud to be raising a generation to love the outdoors.
